My 2001 jetta key will unlock the doors but it will not lock them or arm the alarm system, when I push the buttons on the remote. I have two keys and neither of them will work and the indicator light on both keys flashes when I push the buttons on the key. I have to push the lock button on the inside to lock the doors then insert the key into the door to get the drivers door to actually lock. What is wrong?

It sounds like the remote maybe having a problem with the unlock button. If okay
Get a scan done to check for trouble codes. Central locking system is equipped with self diagnostics and the trouble codes would throw a light on what could be wrong.

Replace the key FOB battery. While you have the fob battery out of the fob, hold the unlock button on the fob for 30 seconds. This will discharge the capicitors. If you just want to try doing the capacitor discharge without replacing the battery, you may. But typically when this happens, the battery should be replaced as well.

If this doesn't fix it, you either need a new key FOB, or reprogramming, which you need a VAS or VAG scantool for.
