Clutch problems with 01 Celica

So I have a 2001 toyota celica that I just bought. On my way to richmond which is a 6 hr drive from where I picked the car up. The car is driving fine til I stop for gas. Get bk in the car to continue and can't get the clutch out of 1st gear. It was stuck I finally got it bk to the gas station and forced the gears into place so I could get it home. But now I can't figure out the problem.

Could be your transaxel! Ours went out about 3 years ago and I could barely get it in reverse. Ours had a noise it was making right before it got so bad we had to get it towed. The noise sounded like a stick was stuck in the tire!
