Shifter cable broke while I was driving

The shifter cable of my 2001 s-type jaguar broke while I was driving on the highway, then my friend helped me replace it, and now it starts, but whenever I put the gear on reverse, neutral, or drive, the car doesn't move, it acts like its on neutral, and whenever I put it on park, it parks. So what is going on, and what do I need to do?

While you were driving?

Check the fluid level. Beyond that, you will need a trans shop to see what has failed. It may be internal. Does not make sense replacing the cable and no engagement.

Is it hooked up properly?

Ok, then you will need a shop to check it out for you to find the failure.

Ok, thanks. But I don't want to be cheated. I want to make sure its not the transmission before I go to the mechanic.

Assuming you did everything correctly, it is the only possibility.

Double check your work to be sure.
