Ford Ranger Smoke Problem

Hello my 2001 ford ranger xlt s.5 TD is sluggish upon starting, taking 2 or 3 turns of the key to fire up, pressing the accelerator seems to make it easier to start. there is lots of white smoke(which in the last couple of days has taken on a darker tinge) and a genreal smell of diesel/ oil.
is this the glow plugs what could it be?

check the glow plug system to be sure it is functioning.

white smoke is burning coolant from head gasket leak. have it checked to confirm.

if you plug it in at night, does it start ok??
