What is the fix for power side mirrors that do not function properly?

I have a 2001 Ford F150 Lariet the power Side Mirrors function only for the up/down positions on both sides. What is the troubleshooting procedures and the best way to fix this problem?

check the switch for commands for the side to side. if there is a command, mirrors are bad. if no command, then the switch is bad
