The model seems to have 2 brake light switches, or two switches next to each other than seem to work with the brake pedal. When putting on the brake, its suppose to release the button on the shift knob to put it into gear, normally, when pressing the break pedal you can hear this. For the past few days it seems to work when it wants to, sometimes keeping foot on brake will eventually release the button to put into gear. Past knowledge, I went right to the break light switch and thought I was done. I went under the dash and manually depressed the one button and heard the release click each time I pushed it in and let it out, I thought fore sure that was my switch needing replacement. Remote possibility in my upside down replacement process the cheaply made switch loosened up so the contact point isn't being made. I will attempt another new switch, however, I owned a 2000 ZX2 escort and somewhat remember there being a relay in the center shifter console also that goes bad. The one brake light switch has a plunger, same as the one pictured on your site, the other is more of a small button, this is the one when pushed, released the shifter. Is it possible one switch(plunger) is for brake lights to come on, and the button switch operates the shifter release? My gut still says buy another switch, that the one I put in came loose from the poor crimp job and isn't making good contact? Any suggestions? Thank you

Buy a better switch or try to make the crimp tighter on the switch you did buy. Check what I've pointed out in pic it may be a relay in the shift actuator. But normally you have to buy the whole switch. You should check the brake switch that is pointed out as there may be an adjustment on that you can make.
