Tapping noise

Hello I just bought a 2001 bmw 530i it has 108,000 miles and when the car is on I hear a tapping sound from the left side of the engine(i think) but we could this mean?

It is most likely a hydraulic lifter making some noise. Without being there with you I cannot confirm this, however, the noise (if it is the lifter)is not out of the ordinary and the car will probably not be any the worse for it. It could however be considered a bit bothersome, nobody likes to hear ticking noises from their BMW, least of all me! Hopefully this response satisfies your question, if not, I'll in the area all day.
