Manual transmission problems, which course would be the best?

I recently purchased a Mazda 2000 Protege DX with Manual Transmission, and at some point it had been driven in the middle of a highway and ever since the transmission hasn't shifted into reverse. From what I understand from the previous owner, there are pins that were knocked out or something like that.

My question is which would be the best course of action:
-Rebuild the transmission
-Replace with a similar junkyard transmission
-Replace with another transmission that bolts on, but is a better performance transmission

If you know of any transmissions that would bolt on easily please let me know

The selectors are on the top of the box I am fairly sure, I would get a mechanic to check the selectors first, it may just be a cable adjustment or something equally simple.

It kind of makes a free spinning noise if you try to force it in, and it never fully shifts in

I would get a mechanic to see if they an select revers at the box, you can do this your self if you watch the action of the levers when someone selects reverse, disconnect the cables and manually select the gear, if it goes in and you can drive in reverse, the problem will be in the shifter quadrant in the cabin or a cable problem I feel.
