Mazda b2200 Compression Problem

I have a friend with a Mazda b2500 with the 2200 motor in it. Whenever itscold and we crank it it jumps and sputters for the first three or four times. It only does this when it's cold. The motor has two coil packs and 8 plugs. I think its not the original motor. I am not sure if it could be a compression problem or if it could be the timing. I am not sure how to adjust the timing without the distributor. Can you help me, what might be causing it to sputter and it has a bad sucking sound when it's trying to start. Could it be timing or flooding or compression? I would like to know before I tear it all down. Thank you in advance.

Check the spark plugs and wires first. Have the wires tested. Ensure the spark plug wires are tight especially at ignition coils.
