Why does my rpms run so high ?

I have a 2000 mazda 626 its a ES v6 standard transmission. it runs really high rpms. at the speed of 60 im already at 3000 rpms and it keeps climbing up from there . It does not go down it just runs really high . I'm affraid to drive it on a long drive because at 70 mph its at 4000 rpms. That cant be normal..RIGHT?

No, that doesn't sound right. Could the clutch be slipping?
