Sometimes after driving in traffic the car will shift down hard and when you try to drive at higher speeds the car will not shift into overdrive. I will pull over, turn the engine off and right back on and the car will run fine. It will shift right in to overdrive like its suppose to. It shift smooth and runs fine. Its like it resets itself after you turn the engine off and then back on.

Have you checked to see if there are any trouble codes stored in the computer? Is the trans fluid clean and full?

I had the tiburon scanned at autozone this morning. It throwed a code po734. Definition is fourth gear incorrect ratio#1- probable cause, short circuit condition
#2-pressure solenoid faulty
#3-internal transmission failure
Could this also be a temperature sensor or a battery cable loose?
I found the negitive cable end loose at the battery and the temperature sensor looked like it had been leaking.

I would say no to the temp sensor, but the battery is a different story. Remember, all the power the vehicle uses starts at the battery. If there is a problem there, it can cause many problems. Make sure everything is clean and tight and see if it makes a difference. It may take a couple miles to relearn anything that was lost.

Let me know what you find.

I put new battery terminal ends on and tightend them and it seemed at first the tranny was working correctly but after the temperature warmed up on the car it started shifting badly, not going into overdrive and even shifting down harder than normal. I was told that if someome had the car before me and changed the transmission fluid and diddnt use hyundai approved fluid that can cause it to not shift right and also the speed sensor. I know that transmission places like to replace trannys and make a couple of thousand instead of only replacing a selinoid or sensor so any wisdom would be greatly appreciative.

Yes, a speed sensor can cause this problem. However, usually a check engine light is set and a code is stored in the computer. As far as the trans fluid, some of these vehicles call for very specific fluids. That could also be an issue. But, has it done this since you got it?

I always thought it streached 3rd gear out too far before shifting into overdrive but it started not going in to overdrive about 2 weeks ago. The check engine lite came on day before yesterday and it throwed a po 734 code.

P0734 is detected when the transmission cannot be shifted to the 4th gear position, even if electrical circuit is good and functioning properly. It can be caused by dirty trans fluid, low trans fluid, a bad or faulty shift solenoid, plugged trans filter, or the hydraulic control circuit (HCC).

I'm going to change the fluid and filter and see if that helps, that about the simplest thing tha I can do. That shift solenoid, is that inside the tranny or on the outside? Is this soenoid also called a pressure?Solenoid

Is the fluid presently dirty? As far as the solenoid, it is called a shift solenoid.

I recently got the transmission on my 2000 Tiburon repaired. Afterwards I began to have issues with my overdrive. When the car would reach a speed for the overdrive to kick in it would***** hard and then go into overdrive. However, today I was getting off a highway exit and was stopped when I went to get off the exit I pushed the gas pedal hard and the car was slow to takeoff. The check engine light came on and the car would no longer switch into overdrive.
