For the last year there has been a weird sound from the engine, and of late with the cold it has become a lot louder. The sound I would best match, like a small diesel engine or a rough idling engine. (It is a normal unleaded fuel car). Car still starts easy enough, little loss in power, no smoking, no fluid leaking, no oil burning and the only code is for a bad MAF sensor. I have had friends say that is the problem and other say that wouldn't do it. Any help would be great.

Noise problem is something we are not of much help unless where it is coming from. Base on a guess, I would say it is the valve lifters that is causing the noise and that could be due to failed hydraulic valve lifters, low engine oil level or oil quality has deteriorated.

Yeah, sadly noise alone is hard to guess on. If it helps at all the noise goes away at around 40 MPH, and sound is coming from upper engine. (Used a tube today to try and get a location) I have heard that it could be the valves once before, but that was a guess from a friend. Oil level is good and been changed a month a ago.

I would check to make sure that the tube from the air filter box to the engine is on tight and doesn't have any hole or damage first. Then make sure the air filter is clean and the tube isn't blocked. If all that's good then replace the MAF. If you've got a code and its bad then it will run poorly, but I'm not sure about the noise.
