2000 Honda Civic Repair Question

Honda Civic Clutch Problem
I Have a 2000 Honda Civic Ex, manual shift. The engine revs up while driving and sometimes while sitting at a red light. I have to turn the it off while driving and pull over. I also pump the gas pedal just in case something is sticking...smoke comes from under the hood sometimes. What could be the issue?

sounds like a slipping clutch.
have it checked by a shop to verify
