Overheated while driving drove a little to far before pulling over and the idle went haywire then the steerin locked up. Now will not run. What could it be? My fear is that the engine seized up and may need replaced which would cost more than the car is worth

Put a socket on the crankshaft bolt and see I fit will turn over by hand then check battery/starting system check engine oil first as well. Your fear may be correct. Nothing will kill and engine faster then overheating. Even if the motor isn't seized, it may still have severe head or piston damage. If the starter won't even crank, then you may be is big trouble.
