Hi I have a 2000 mustang that couldn't start last night. I had to get it towed to my house and now will have it towed to a mechanic I was just wondering how much will it be to get my air filter change and the fuel pump changed? I really think this is the problem. I just don't wanna get wheeled and dealed at the shop. So I would like to know an estimate of how much it should cost to repair. Thanks!

My car randomly shuts off and on while I am driving it. Could it be a bad fuel pump? If so, what does replacing a fuel pump usually cost? I can buy the fuel pump at advanced auto for $109.00 but what does the labor cost?

Before replacing it, I would check fuel pump pressure to confirm the pump is bad. It could even be a partially plugged fuel filter. As far as the labor, most shops usually charge you for about 2 hours labor.

Thank you so much. I will replace the fuel filter first and get fuel pressure checked. Have a great day!

Hi. I am in the process of getting my Ford 2002 Mustang V6 fuel pump replaced and was quoted $245.00 for the part and $180.00 for the labor. Labor will be two hours because they will need to drop the tank. This part is new from a reputable company.

Sounds like a good price. The labor is the part that can add up quick on some repairs. For instance many AC or heater cores are not that expensive, but because many vehicles need to have the entire dash removed to get to them you get a bill with the parts at $200.00 but over $1,000.00 in labor due to the time it takes to remove and replace the entire assembly.

1996 Mustang V6 @ least 134K (It quit counting a few months back.)
A few things, not sure if they are related.
1. My cars temp has been running warmer than normal with the temp gague just jumping all around. I had the thermostat replaced and the system flushed but it continues UNLESS I keep the AC on. The heater core went out last winter and I just bypassed it. AC gets and stays cold, but car will overtheat without it on.
2. Car is running "lean". Not sure what to do first, O2 sensors, fuel pump? Also you can smell gas after you get done driving and I get horrible mileage- estimate 15miles/gal.
3. Just started, when driving it is fine but if in Park the Oil pressure gague goes nuts, Low-High, Low-High, and you can hear the engine reving as this happens. Seems to be getting worse. Car shakes briefly between 40-50 mph and 60-70.
I know I need my serpentine belt changed- does this cause any of this?
This car feels like a money pit, I need to know what to do and in what order to do it, so I can get my only means of transport working to where I feel safe. PLEASE HELP.

Will the cooling fan come on without the a c being used? Usually when the a c is turned on, the cooling fan will turn on with it, without a c cooling fan should turn on somewhere around 210-215F I think, check that out, gauges are not necessarily overly accurate, but if you've owned the car for a while. They are a good baseline for determing if something is out of whack, for example lets say your temp gauge has the word NORMAL on it, the cooling fan usually kicks on around the letter L, if it doesn't maybe somethings going on that needs to be looked into.

Yes, I would say your fan is not coming on when the engine gets to the point that the sensor switch should turn it on. When you turn on your AC system, the fan will run all the time, which is why it runs fine with the AC on. You need to check your sensor that signals the fan to turn on. Or just buy a new one and replace it. That is a start.
