2000 Ford Explorer Repair Question

Ford Explorer Coolant Problem
In my Explorer the temp gauge fluctuating after its been driven for awhile. There is no steam or smell coming from under the hood. What is the cause of this?

could be a bad thermostat. have it checked and make sure the coolant level is full.
