2000 Ford Explorer Repair Question

Ford Explorer Tire Problem

I noticed that the rear wheels started spinning in the rain. Its never done that before. is it possible that the Auto 4x4 is out? or what could be the possible reason for it acting different? I have owned this vehicle for 12 years.
