2000 Ford Explorer Repair Question

My check engine light has been on for a long time.
But recently the check gauge light has been popping on and off and even when it is not lit, the temperature gauge is bouncing up and down and the heat is not always warm and sometimes blows cold. I was thinking it was the thermostat but it isn't overheating yet.

check your fluid level first if low have it pressure checked.
