Car shaking and then dies with check engine light on

I have a 2000 ford explorer sport and for a whe now my check engine light has been on and the car shakes real bad and dies if not accelerating not sure what the problem is but some advice would help don't have tons of money to pay a dealer if I can fix my self would be ideal.
