2000 Dodge Ram Repair Question
Dodge Ram Starter Problem
first, you must find out where the smoke came from. when that is determined then move on to the starter replace complete unit.
make sure all grounds are clean and tight
ok, i was just out there and moved the relay from the starter to the trailer spot and vise versa, After doing so, it started cranking with no clicking, and tried to fire but would not. So I'm thinking the smoke may have been the relay blowing. So now that the clicking is gone but still wont start, Im at a standstill... I cant really see the connections on top of the starter (at least I believe it is the starter heh), I can try taking it off and clean them up to see if that helps. But would that still be a possibility now that it is at least cranking? and what would cause the starter relay to blow like that? I live in Ohio and it was 3 degrees yesterday morning and about 27 degrees now. Dont know if that would make a difference or not...
ok, spray some carb cleaner in the air filter and see if it fires and stalls
ok i will go try that now... if it does start and stall, fuel problem? if it does not start and stall, starter problem?.... trying to get as much info as i can, because i have to walk a block to our parking lot (hate living in the city..lol)
yes, it may be a bad fuel pump
well, couldnt get it to fire, so i pulled the starter... that was fun...heh... gonna try and find a ride and get a new one and see what happens
did it crank over??
ok it cranked but still didnt fire,so i went and picked up a starter, just put it in about an hour ago, fired right up... was pretty happy... shut it off after a cpl min, fired up again... so I ran around town a little bit, about 30min or so, pulled in parking lot, shut it off, waited about 30 seconds, turned the key, it was real hesitant to turn and would not start than after about 5-10seconds it stopped turning, did not fire... smoke from under hood again, looked like it was from the fuse box, the relay was warm, unplugged it and plugged it back in, turned the key it cranked 1 or 2 times never fired then nothing again... i have one relay left to try but am afraid to fry it, if that is indeed the problem... and if it is I need to find put why it is blowing like that when i try to start it...i did check the oil and it is pretty low, so i dont know if that would keep it from starting, but am going to put some oil in it and hope for the best i guess.... any other thoughts on what it might be?
yea so as expected, wen out this afternoon and it fired right up no problem, let it run for about an hour (forgot it was running) and shut it off, waited a min or two and tried to start, but nothing no click, lights dimmed, no crank.... still havent got oil, but am doing that tonight and gonna try tomorrow and see if that makes a difference as to why it starts cold and not when it warms up... still not sure what that smoke was, as i did nothing to the relay today and it was fine, so thinking it was not the relay blowing... now i am curious to know what it is... blowback maybe? from trying to start the truck with it cranking but no fire maybe the pressure releases it when i stop cranking?
