2000 Chevy express 4.3 won't start/stay running

The other day my chevy express van decided not to start anymore. We changed the coil on it and got it running but it would sputter bad and had to keep giving it gas to keep running. Now today it won't start again.I gave it a tune up and new fuel filter this past winter. Seems like its not getting enough gas to run, but not sure.I hear the fuel pump turn on with the key and turn off when the key turns it off. It had been backfiring lately before this happened, and would sputter while driving every now and then. This is my business vehicle and need to get it back on the road. Any ideas of what it could be or what to check for?

Was the check engine light on? Have you checked fuel pump pressure to make sure it was within spec? Did you notice any black or white smoke from the exhaust when it was running? Have you checked for spark at the plugs?
