Why does my temperature gauge keep getting high?

I've already changed the thermostat, did a radiator cleanse. When the heater is on high the temperature goes up even more. The heater has not been working for about a year now. So I know something is wrong cause the heater will blowout really hot air when temperature gauge starts to go.
