Shift override

I have a 1999 Volvo 850 why does the shift lock sometimes and I have to use the shift over ride and when I do, the lights and directional s do not work?

Are you brake lights working if so could be the shift interlock control solenoid not engaging

Sounds like a text book case of a worn ignition switch. Try wiggling the key in the switch. If the lights come on and you can shift out of park, consider replacing the ignition switch. 4 screws to remove the top & bottom steering wheel cover and 2 screws to remove the switch after you detach the wiring plug. Tip -- Use the torx screw driver that came in your tool kit!
