There is a knocking noise every time the car is trying to shift into the next gear?

So is this a automatic transmission?Also if it is are you trying to describe a hard shift into every gear?

yes its an automatic. It has a hard time shifting - its goes knock, knock, knock, knock, then shifts into a gear.

Knock knock knock?Iam confused are you saying it slips in and out of gear several times before it actual engages into the next gear?
