Headliner Replacement

Is the headliner exactly the same in a 1999 and 2001 Saturn SL? We just bought a 1999 with the headliner material falling down and thought about replacing the material, but the sunroof leaking has left the headliner in less than perfect shape. We found two in a junk yard, but they are both 2001s. Would they work in our 1999? Thanks!

If we were talking about 1996-1999 I would say go for it they are the same body style. But in 2000 they changed the body style which ran all the way thru 2002 untill the end of the S model saturns. So there is a good chance it could be different when I changed the head liners I always jus asked for the year I was working on.I would say its different as far your sunroof leak you need to fix that before replacing the headliner or your going to ruin the replacement one.I can tell you the most common reason for them leaking and how to fix the sunroof if you want. Can you open the sunroof that way we can test if iam right to why its leaking.

Thank you very much for your quick reply! I was also thinking that the body styles had changed, but wasn't sure. As far as the sunroof. We just got the car last night and removed the headliner when we got home. The sunroof will not open, but you can hear the motor run. When we took off the headliner, it appears that a cable is broken (or gone!). We were thinking that the leaking could possibly be that the sunroof is not shut tight since it stopped working. But I also read that the drain tubes could be clogged and we are going to try to blow them out with an air compressor. With a light, we can actually see water in the one, which seems like a good sign that they are clogged. Did you have any other suggestions about the sunroof leaking? Thank you again for your help!

Yes sounds like your front drains are clogged the reason they clog is because at the end of the drain they have a duck bill valve that fits into the frame and goes on the end of the hose they clog very easy. Heres my trick remove both forward sill plate molding that cover the area by the dash. Then you will see a black square plug pull that out. Then in the square hole you see the drain hose unplug the drain hose from the duck bill valve that fits into the body. Watch for all the water backed up in the hose when it drains out. Then remove the duck bill valve clean all the debris out of it. Then get a razor blade and cut the duck bill valve part of it off flush to the rest of the assembly. This will allow the drains to drain twice as fast as they did before and will be harder for them to clog in the future. Then put it all back together and water test it for leaks. As far as the sun roof it probably needs a complete sun roof module very common for those cars only thing really replacable on the sun roof is the motor and relay sounds like both those work if the motor is running. As far as the headliner goes ask a upolstery shop how much they would charge to redo your headliner if you brought it out of the car to them.
