1999 Saturn SC2 Repair Question

Saturn SC2 Axle Problem
I purchased the right drive axle from autozone, a gold series. when i installed it, it would not seat properly and now it will not even come back out. i believe they may have used an incorrect retaining ring. got any suggestions other than pulling the engine and tranny?

Rent a slide hammer and get a axle pulling adapter and remove the axle that way.
