Hooked up battery cables backwards

I have a 99 mercury sable 3.0 engine my buddy put the neg cable on positive terminal and vise sersa relized and removed it quickly we poped a few fuses and now with a new battery in car the car wont start unless jumped with another car and when running the battery light is on. I need help broke and just trying to help a friend

Prob not starting? Main fuse was prob blown if so.

Thank u for ur input bat light stays on car will run if jumper cables attached as soon as we pull the jumper cables off car runs for 15sec then sputters out
