Popping sound when you put in reverse like it is squaring in rear. Drive and changes gear perfect. Smooth ride. What could be popping sound when putting in reverse

Might be a bad u joint or a broken gear tooth in rear end.

The only thing that would be expensive to fix would be a chipped gear and sometimes they can be ground out of the way to not do that. It should be seen to actually check out what I've suggested.
