How do I install the freeze plug in the back of the block please help cause the people that fix cars want 250 dollars to fix it and the part cost a dollar that doesnt make sense. So how can I put it on but its not in the front of the block its in the back

Require a special tool so that is seats squarely. If this freeze plug is in the back of the block, transmission may have to come out. If by back of the block you mean the side facing the firewall, it is very difficult to install those with the trans in as well

Hi,
Got a 1997 Taurus GL, 4.0L Vulcan OHV, flex fuel with 107,700 miles. Has been sitting in the driveway for a number of years, getting it ready for my son now. Put in a new battery and it fired right up. Drained and flushed the radiator with Prestone Radiator Cleaner. When running with fresh water after the flush, after it came up to operating temp, looks like water if being expelled from the right side of the front cylinder head, just behind the ignition coil pack mount. I have to disconnect the mount to get a better look at this. Is this some type of freeze plug on the cylinder head? If so, how do I remove and reinstall a new one? I do have a Haynes repair manual - no help on this.

If its leaking pry it out, get a new one and press it in correct socket size will do the trick, make sure you use sealant.

Hi Ras,
Thanks so much for the advice. Sure enough, after getting a better look at the plug, see a nice hole in it! I have removed it already and cleaned up the opening on the head. Anys suggestions as to what type of sealant I should use for the new plug?

For me am cheap I just use JB weld-ask the partstore what's best they'll hook you up.

How much is it to change a freeze plug that was not pop but it rosted out and is't nesesary to take out the engine to change it?

If you can reach it go for it, some vehicles ive had a easy time and some I had to rotate the whole motor forward.

Engine Mechanical problem
1995 Ford Taurus 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive 167, 00 miles

I bought this car from a dealer last month. After driving it about 2 to 3 weeks & the freeze plug blew out, while driving, & lost all anti freeze & water. I replaced the freeze plug, & used 50/50 coolant, but now it runs hot and the heater will not heat. Do I need to change the head gaskets & if so can I do it or needs to go to professional? I am good at working on cars, but this one as me stumped.

You may have got air trapped in the coolant system when refilling try bleeding the sytem. Or drain and refill coolant system with engine running to prevent air pockets.

If you know exactly where's it leaking at -remove the component that's blocking it-drill it in the center and pry it out with a big long screwdriver then use a JB weld to seal it back up along with a new plug

Heather, there are several sized and different locations of freeze plugs on engine blocks and heads. Use a pressure tester to find the leaking one(s). After you find it, use a freeze plug tool to install new one(s). Punch the old one at it's weak spot(leak), then pull it out with vice grips. Not many diagrams available for freeze plugs, but there are plugs ont all sides of the block and front and rear of the heads.

Do you know why they blew out? Did it freeze up? You may have other more serious problems associated with the freezing so a different engine/car might be the cheapest fix?

Cost depends on accessiblity of the plug, and yes there is a tool that can ease the job, it comes with plug drivers of different sizes, and the head can be adjusted to different angles.
