1999 Ford Taurus Repair Question

If air conditioning is on the car runs badly, turn air off car runs fine?
I have a 1999 ford taurus. When i run my air conditioning there is a loud thumping noise coming from somewhere under the hood. If i do not run the air, the car runs fine. The noise is especially noticable when braking or idiling

I would see if the ac compressor is coming apart?

I'm not sure how to tell. what to look for ect. reading posts about other peoples problems im pretty sure the ac compressor is bad. I have to drive about 5 hours on the highway in about a week. is it safe to drive if the compressor is bad?

If it only does it with the ac on you should b ok.With the engine cold an turned off see if the center of the ac compressor turns freely.
