Hey. I have a 1999 Ford Ranger I bought and installed a steering colum for the same make and model_year. It came with pre installed ignition switch and key. I don't have the original ignition from the stock switch but I have the original key. What do I need to do to get the new steering column with its ignition switch and it's key came with. Working fine with the truck to crank it? And activate fuel pump and starter. And how much will it cost me. I need to know ASAP thank you.

You need a scan tool that can program keys on your ranger my online repair mAnual we use says the ngs scan tool. Which is the ford factory scan tool iam sure there are others but not sure which ones they are. Is there anyway you can use your old parts to start it?Probably not since your changing everything. If you call around to lock smith's you may find one that specializes in cars and trucks and may have the tools to program it.

Are you sure that a ngs scan tool can reset the steering column and new ignition switch/w/key. To make the new components work with the vehicle correctly?
And how much does a service like that cost. Can you give me a estamate?

I looked it up on Mitchell on demand and thats the first step is to hook up the ngs scan tool. Thats if all keys are lost or if the ignition switch assembly is changed. Also says it takes 10 mins with the ngs hooked up. Its to help prevent theft nothing perfect for that though.I can tell you your best bet would be to call the dealer for a price because dealers can vary on what they actually charge for the same service like that. One may charge 1.5hrs another may only charge an hour.I would say to be safe 1-2hrs labor time's the hourly shop labor rate. The hourly shop rate will varey from area state etc. So again its best to call them for pricing also I would call around to the locksmiths because some of them sometimes have key programmers and are able to do that service.

Also some local auto repair shops will have the equipment to that as well so again you would have to call around and ask if they have it and how much they would charge for that service. Not all the independent repair shops will have it depends on which scan tools etc they use etc.

Unles you can reuse your old ignition cylinder and old key no it wont start. Even if you rekey your old key to your new ignition cylinder it still has to be programmed.A new key or ignition cylinder has to be programmed.
