Welcome to 2CarPros.

If coolant is flowing through the core and both hoses get hot, suspect a faulty blend air door actuator. It is responsible for the air temp entering the vehicle.

Here is a link that shows in general how one is replaced:

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/replace-blend-door-motor

this guide can help as well

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/car-heater-not-working

Here are the directions for replacing it. Before you just replace it, confirm it isn't moving when you change from cold to hot. The attached pics correlate with the directions.

Welcome:

I was wondering if both heater core hoses are getting hot. The bottom line is there could be electric, vacuum, or cable controls. I need to know the engine size, if it has manual climate control or if it is auto climate control.

If there is a vacuum actuator issue, you may hear a hissing or notice a slightly rough idle.

Here are the possibilities:

The climate control system heats or cools the vehicle interior depending on the function selector position and the temperature selected. Function selector position determines heating or cooling and air distribution. The temperature blend control setting determines air temperature. The list discusses the entire system and isn't limited to just the air temp door actuator.

The manual climate control components are used to:
- select air inlet source (outside or recirculated).
- select blower motor speed.
- select discharge air temperature (temperature blend).
- select discharge air location (defrost, panel, floor).
- select A/C compressor clutch operation.

Control system Inputs
The climate control assembly has three system controls:
- The A/C heater function selector switch combines a vacuum selector valve with two electrical switches to supply battery positive voltage (B+) to the A/C clutch circuit and the blower motor control circuit.
- The temperature selection is accomplished with a potentiometer connected to the electric blend door actuator that controls positioning of the temperature blend door. Movement of the control knob from COOL (Blue) to WARM (Red) causes a corresponding movement on the air temperature control door and determines the temperature that the system will maintain.
- The blower motor switch controls blower motor speed by adding or bypassing resistors in the heater blower motor switch resistor.

Let me know.

My air-conditioning unit runs constantly. I can't get any heat at all. I was told it could be a relay or the switch in the dash. I am not a mechanic and cannot afford one. How do I go about checking these two things. I know where the relay is, but I'm not sure what I'm looking for in a problem. The switch I have no idea on. All I know is how to take out the dash unit.

Well, you could unplug you AC unit, this should make it stop running... Unless the bearings are seized on the wheel. Then it will keep running. It's the only plug on the top of your AC unit. Regardless the AC unit running all the time should have no effect on your heat. Check you coolant level, and for leaks. No heat often is a result of bad thermostat or radiator cap.

My truck is well taken care and runs well.
Back in 2004 the original thermostat was replaced because it stuck closed and was causing an overheating problem.
Tonight when I drove my truck I turned the heat on and it blew out cold air only and the temperature gauge was showing in the normal range and took the normal amount of time to get to where it was. So I am thinking it may not be the thermostat this time. What else could it be?

There are a few things that can be causing that. best thign to do is warm the vehicle up then go under the hood and feel both heater core hoses, what do ya' find.

Are both hot?
one hot and one warm?
One hot and one cold?
Neither hot?
or both just warm?

Usually this is a blend door issue.

Replaced radiator and thermostat but still no heat out of blowers and top hose is collapsing. It was not doing that before. Gauge barley moves up when idling but when driving down the road it bottoms out.

Hello,

The heater will not work if the engine does not get warm and you say you replaced the thermostat? Super cold where you are? Can you tell me the temperature of the thermostat you installed?

Cheers, Ken

The heat in my truck doesn't get warm unless I drive about 5-6 miles after I let it warm up for about 10 minutes. When I stop the truck the heat goes cold. On top of that the heat isn't very warm at all. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks!

Hi,

First, is the engine coolant full? Next, allow the vehicle to reach operating temp with the heater on high. Feel both heater core hoses that enter at the firewall under the hood Are both hot?

Here is a link that explains common causes of no or little heat. Let me know if it helps.

Hi,

If they aren't getting hot, there is no coolant flowing through the heater core. I would start by trying to flush it.

Let me know.

One hose gets hot now after I flushed the entire system. Now I'm having a problem with the coolant blowing out of the radiator cap. I've replaced the cap twice thinking it could have been faulty. That didn't work. Also, I want to add that when I turn the truck off the overflow tank fills up with coolant and pops the top off. I have to add 1.5 gallons back to the radiator. Could it be a stuck thermostat that's not allowing the pressure through the system? Thanks for the help and advice!

Do me a favor. It sounds like it is either overheating or there is a head gasket issue.

With the engine cold and the coolant full and the radiator cap off, start the engine. Does the coolant shoot out of the radiator when cold?

As far as the no heat, that was the result of low coolant.

Let me know what happens when you do the above. If it does shoot out when the engine is cold, I need you to follow this link that explains how to test for a bad head gasket:

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/head-gasket-blown-test

Let me know what happens.

It does not shoot out it bounces a little but none sprays out. I changed the thermostat and filled it. I still have quite a bit that flows to the overflow after I drive it. But this time it didn’t blow the top off. Still not getting heat longer than 3 minutes.
