My 99 ford focus is making a putting sound when idle and also skipping a beat on the revs any idea what this sound could be?

Check for exhaust leaks for the noise. If the check engine light isn't on, check for vacuum leaks. If you have a "dead" miss where the engine is shaking, loss of power. Check to make sure the plug wires are good, plugs are good and not loose. If it has been a long time since a tune up, it may be time.
