Suggested to change the crankshaft positioning sensor?

I have a 2003 Ford Escort ZX2. Whenever the engine warms up, it just shuts off. I have replaced the battery, spark plugs, and coil pack. I was suggested to change the crankshaft positioning sensor, but I cannot find it anywhere on the engine. I was also told to replace the ECU, but that's pretty expensive. The fuel pump works fine, not too sure what else it could be.

Rasmataz: I don't think its a fuel issue. The pump turns on fine and it gets fuel. We tried seeing if the engine has spark by doing what you said before, and there wasn't a spark period. Not too sure what it could be.

You can hear the fuel pump come on, it doesn't mean its producing the correct fuel pressure-

No snapping blue spark continue to troubleshoot the ignition system-power input to the coil/coil packs, coil's resistances, distributor pick-up coil, ignition control module, cam and crank sensors and computer Note: If it doesn't apply disregard it.

We dont' have that year of escort in u.S. Here is two different places to look as these are 2.0 liter engines. They are held in by a bolt, disconnect electric, remove bolt and put screwdriver and try to pry out gently so it won't break on you revers for reinstall. Mayb put some pentrating oil aroundit prior toremoval

I have a no start condition on this car it is the dohc, I hooked up the scan tool and piulled the code P0320, and a P0300, I was wondering if you could get me the r&r procedure of the crankshaft positioning sensor, and where it is located, Battery voltage is good and no sign of coolant loss was just driving it and it will not start it is getting fuel and spark. It is an automatic transmission. Thanks guys.

If your getting spark crk sensor should be good code 0320 is pointing towards distributor cap, rotor button, or bad wire. You may want to check them first.

It has coil packs it just turns over, on the scan tool Rpms would not exceed 300.

REMOVAL

1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
2. Raise the vehicle; refer to Maintenance/Service and Repair.
3. Remove the exhaust manifold.

4. Disconnect the electrical connector from the Crankshaft Position Sensor (CKP Sensor).

5. Remove the crankshaft position sensor.

O Remove the bolt.
O Remove the crankshaft position sensor.

INSTALLATION

1. Lubricate the O-ring lightly with engine oil XO-5W30-QSP or equivalent meeting Ford specification WSS-M2C153-G and the API Certification Mark.

NOTE: Inspect the O-ring for damage; replace if required.

2. Follow the removal procedure in reverse order.

You were very helpful in diagnosing possible causes of no spark. When I pulled the Crank Position Sensor (no easy task) I found that it had wear marks across 2/3 of the tip and had in fact worn through about on third of the plastic. It had been rubbing against something. I don't have a replacement yet and thought I better question the cause of the wear before I stick a new one in. Looks to be about 1/32" lose off the tip.
Any Ideas?

Also, if this is not a disasterous problem, would a shim on the new one be in order and would it effect proper operation of the sensor?

Check the harmonic balancer that contains the ID teeth. They have a rubber core that mounts them to the pulley and they sometimes go bad. This causes the pulley to seem out of round, especially at higher RPM. You may need a new harmonic balancer also. Easy to replace, so let me know if you need to do it.

Thanks flexy but the Crank Position Sensor on the 2000 Escort is not at the front. I spent 45 minutes trying to find it there. Even the Haynes book says it's there.
After some more checking I found a post on the net that said it was at the rear, below the exaust and that's where I finally found it. It appears that it gets its signal off of the flywheel so I will check that next.

Thanks for the help. We found it but the car still won't start. The car quit going down the road and hasn't started again. We checked for fuel and it's getting gas, we checked spark and we are getting that, what else could we check? We are changing the spark plugs today I don't know if we will have any luck. Any advise will be greatly appreciated.

Is the Check Engine Light (CEL) ON?

If so, can you scan and get codes?

A low end scanner is about $50 at popular auto stores. Could be useful later for you and "donating" buddies! Lol!

The Auto stores usually will scan you for Free.I have begged off duty personnel, to do it for me, when I couldn't drag one in (usually w/ a nice tip!), Before I got my scanner

Any kinda hint, things were not well, prior to the "Walkage" part of your ordeal?

My car recently died on the road, I thought it just ran out of gas. After I put gas in it, it still wouldn't start. The spark plugs are firing, and I sprayed ether into the engine, but it still didn't start. My mechanic has checked and replaced the: ignition control module, computer beneath the console, coil pack, fuel pump, and the crankshaft position sensor. What would be the next step from here?

If you put ether in it and it has spark it should run. Is the compression good? Be sure the timing belt isnt broken

The car was runing in the driveway it died like you turned the key off I ckecked the fireing and it wasnt fireing I changed the camshaft sensor and the crankshaft sensor and coil pack try to start it and still no fire what would cause this will a bad fuel pump keep it from fireing what could it be.
