have compression checked as you may have a broken timing belt

Based on your description, it sounds like a broken belt or at least one that jumped time.

This just happened to me on my 1998 escort. I checked EVERYTHING - except the timing. I could see the timing belt, so I assumed that wasn't the problem. Turns out that it just jumped the gears a bit and screwed up the timing. Apparently it's quite common for escorts to do that, according to my mechanic.
