1999 Ford Escort Repair Question

1995 ford escort
I smelled gas while driving for yesterday for about 45 minutes, all of a sudden my car just died while driving and will not restart, smell of gas very strong now. Son says fuel pump looks fine. what could it be?

which 1 ya got? 99 or 95? since fuel pump is in tank, how did son inspect it? did he just look for leaks around tank? i would think a smell of gas that strong and no start would be easy to spot somewhere on/under car?
