I have a 99 ford contour sometimes the car sputters when im stopped at a light or something it has never died but acts like it wants to. Well last night on my home from work it starts sputtering real bad and wont let me get past around 40mph then it kicks in and takes off fine. However when i got to a stop sign it does the samething to me again and while its doing this there is a knocking sound coming from the back of the car.

Fuel injectors dirty/sticking.
Mass airflow sensor/Airflow meter.
Throttle position sensor.
Crankshaft position sensor
Knock sensor
Manifold absolute pressure sensor.
EGR Valve
Fuel pressure regulator leaking or defective fuel pump.
False air leakage.
Fuel contamination.
Foul/defective spark plugs.
Open spark plug wires.
Ignition coil/Coil packs defective.
Incorrect ignition timing.
Cap and rotor.

Note:If it doesn't apply disregard it and keep testing.

when this knocking sound occurs, could you get out of vehicle and attempt to track it down?
