Why is car overheating, affecting the transmission?

Wife's car runs fine for about 5 minutes then starts overheating, with a side effect of the transmission getting sluggish as car can hardly move even if you floor the gas pedal. Coolant seems to be circulating and thermostat was replaced last week. Any suggestions, please? Car is a 1999 Chevy Cavalier with 2.2 engine and auto trans.

You need to start out by verifying fan operation and pressure testing the cooling system for any leaks.
