My van will not start does't even try to turn over so I thought maybe the battery was dead but when I try to hook up the cables to charge I get a spark.

Remove the battery, recharge it, and have it load tested at a parts store.

Let me know what you find.

From the charger cable's?Are you hooking up the charger with it turned on?The first thing i would do is take the battery out and have it charged and tested at the auto part's store.Unless you have a multimeter and you can see what the voltage of the battery read's when you turn the key to start it.

I could be the starter. However, I hoping it is only the battery. As maxpaul123 said, with the charger unplugged, hook the battery up, then plug it in or turn it on. That will eliminate the sparks. Also, it would be a good idea to disconnect the battery from the vehicle when doing this.

Let me know what you find.
