1999 Buick Park Avenue Repair Question

My 99 park ave has two trouble codes,p1404,p0300 how do I check the operation of the EGR valve and is this a good place to start?
Starts up runs rough and when it is put in gear it studders and misses.

P0300= engine misfire detected.
P1404= EGR valve pintle stuck open or stuck closed.
You can check the egr valve using a vacuum source.
