Why does my engine cut out when airflow meter is connected?

My BMW is currently running with no airflow meter because as soon as it is connected the engine will start but cuts out immediately. I have bought a second hand replacement airflow meter to see if this would fix the problem but unfortunately it hasn't. I have taken my car to an auto electrician who has put it on the diagnostics computer but he can't seem to find a problem. Please can you offer me any ideas as to how I may solve this problem?
