My car is having problems starting.

When I put the key in the ignition and turn to the position where you wait for the warning lights to go out, the rev needel start to move widely (at this point the car is not on), all warning lights except the asc go out. if i try to turn the engine on it turns over for ages before it will start - it sometime sthen cuts out immediately. I can hear noises coming from the elctrics in te car while all this happening.
