TRANSMISSION INOP

1998 Toyota Corolla • 4 cylinder FWD Automatic • 115,000 miles

The car was driving normally and suddenly just stopped pulling. After cooling down it would pull forward or reverse only a few yards and then stop pulling at all.
I have checked the fluid, OK
I dropped the pan and the fluid is not burned or smelly. I found very little metal in the pan, only what I would expect from a car with this mileage. There is no apparent damage visible to the eye. The filter appears to be clear of any debris but I have not removed it yet.
I don't have access to a scanner so I can't determine if there are any transmission codes stored. The check engine light has been on for 2 years.
I know that the transmission has electronic shift solenoids but don't actually know the testing procedure.
If the solenoids did go bad would that stop the car from pulling?
Can you suggest some type of diagnostics I can preform with basic tools?
Thank You for your time and help.
