1998 saturn sc2. Electical problem! Car will not start when ignition key is turned on. Checked out starter/selenoid (will engage and start when shorting all three terminals at starter). Changed ignition switch with no success! Fuel gage and other lights in instument panel work when key is turned on. Dome lights, door locks, door chime not work. Once these came on, and he car started when igniton key was turned. This is a very rare occurance -- haven't got these to react since. In the recent past, the car would sporadically start and some times even stop after the car was started. Now can't get any reaction except for this rare occurance when tried to start. Last tip I got was probably neutral saftey switch -- will try this next when I can get back under car (too cold and wet today!) But would a faulty neutral switch affect the dome light, door chime, etc to not also work? Need some help! Thanks. D. Alt

A bad neutral safety switch would only affect the starter not turning not the other thing's.I suspect a loose chime module right in front of the center console on the driver's there is a panel remove it you will see a colored module. It's probably orange push the tab gently aside and wiggle the module out then look at the terminal's and see if there corroded. If not reseat the module in place. Sometimes they just have to be reseated. There is another thing you can check also under that same panel you will see two big 68 way connector's that screw into the fuse box. It should be the one closest to the front of the car that has the larger red wire going to it. It's a 7mm bolt unscrew the connector and remove it. Now turn it over and see if you can see any open female connector opening's. You will clearly be able to tell compared to the other terminal's if it's open. Let me know what you find.

Bearhtr say's>Reply to saturntech9. I just giggled the orange module and got the car started (chimes now
working). I didn't see a tab to push aside to get the module out. But giggling it seemed to work. I suppose I need to look into this further to make sure the problem is fixed. It's my granddaughter's car and don't it to stop on her again at night when she goes to work. Thanks very much for you speedy and helful information.

Is there a way to reply and thank you without going thru all the data gathering below? How doesa one establish a dialogue to either diagnose problems and to thank the technician?

Saturntech9 say's>All you have to do is go back to this question you first started while your signed in and type your reply in the add a reply box and then click the then hit the reply to question button. As far as the chime module the tab is at the bottom of that module I would take the module out and reseat it like I said and you should be good. Also your very welcome that's what were here for to help people with there car's.

Took the chime module out -- car starts without it! What function does it perform besides the chimes? And how does it cause the car to not start if it doesn't have a good connection but yet let the car to start in its absence? Thanks again for all your help!

What run's thru your chime module is your rear window defogger circuit dome lamp key in ignition and head light's on chime it also allows the dome lamp to time out when you get out of the car time's your rear window defogger to turn off after a certain time.I found if your chime fuse blows the car will not start ethier. As far as giving you a explanation as to why it won't start with the module loose but will with it out or the chime fuse blown.I have looked at some wire diagram's and haven't been able to explain it myself. The only reason I know these thing's is from my many years of working on them at the saturn dealer. Let me know if you have anymore question's.

One further question! Do you think I should trust just reseting the chime module or replace it? Thanks!

What I have done is just like I said removed the chime module and put it back in and made sure it was seated all the way in place.I have had really good luck doing that too I think what happens is over time of expansion and contraction that it gets a loose connection and has to be reseated. So if it was my car I would just reseat it. Let me know if you have anymore question's and thanks again for the tip.
