Today when I was driving, in a snowstorm, the wipers decided to stop working in the middle of the windshield. When I have used the wipers they have had a loader grinding mechanical sound to them and they delay works but they never seemed to go to the faster wiper speed when you set them to high. When they stopped working you could still hear the wiper motor running so I don't think it is the motor but when I look up parts there is a wiper transmission and then there is linkage. What is it more likely to be and where can I find pictures of this assembly online before tearing into the vehicle?

The transmission is most likely the failure. You will need the rods but you may as well replace the motor as well since you have issues with it anyway.

A parts store can give the needed diagrams
