Windows down-hood up....can you hear it click(ing) when the key is in the start position?

Lights dim, while trying?

Move your shifter up and down and try it (neutral safety switch)

Tell me if your starter looks like the one I got here from Autozone?

http://www.autozone.com/autozone/parts/Duralast-Import-Starter/1998-Jeep-Cherokee-4WD/_/N-ja2ceZ93xl9?counter=0&filterByKeyWord=STARTER&fromString=search&itemIdentifier=681643_48972_0_

If it is, your possibilities are:

Bad Ignition switch......I'm not leaning toward that....just me!

The Solenoid (little piggyback cylinder) 1)Bad 2) loose wires (tighten, careful not to ground them, may want to remove battery cable 1st)

Battery connections (anything that connects, like the squeezer dealees on the battery clamps, may need cleaning/ tightening---Include Mr. Ground wire, all the way to the engine

Lastly, Bad starter (solenoid and starter can be tested at the parts store, usually already off of your vehicle).....This is normally a FREE SERVICE.
