from my understanding there is a rear and front heater core, i would like to no how can i tell which core is the bad one

How did you determine you even had a bad one. If you physically saw fluid hitting the ground, then that is the one leaking.

There is a drian hole in the rear that was leaking and than at one time there was smoke from the dash.

That is indication of both leaking. You need to have it pressure tested to find out which.
