Does a 1998 chevrolet silverado (automatic) need a chip on the ignition lock cylinder to start.

I have a 1998 chevy in which I have been told will not start because I replaced the ignition lock cylinder. I trashed the old one and did not pay attention to it. A mechanic told me that the truck will not start because the cylinder does not have a chip on it. I just went to my local gm dealership and they said that it does not need one. I am stumped. My mechanic told me the is sure that is the problem and to look for one at the junkyard. Any help is much appreciated.

Thank you,
