Security light on and flashing?

I'd say at least three times a week the when she goes to start the car the the message center on the instrumentation flashes 'Security' and the car will not turn over at all. Each time that happens she has to wait for approx. Ten minutes before trying again and the car fires up no problem.

A few things I've noticed with this issue; inside the owners manual, it states that if the the message center displays 'Security' while the vehicle is running then the system is faulty. Also, I once disconnected the battery in hopes that it would reset the system. It worked the first time, but not the second.

I want to find out if the system needs to be repaired/replaced and if so if this can only be done at a dealership or if it can be done at in the comfort of my drive way.
Also I was wondering if this is a common problem and if there's something she is doing that causes the system to crap itself and anyway to avoid doing that.

Any feed back is appreciated.

How many keys did she get with the car? If she received two keys then try the other one. The security works with the keys. Then have a chip inside of them. You will have check with a dealer to see if that is the problem for the security system. most of the time they will want to see the car to reset it. It does not mean there could be other problems with the system. I would do a hard system reboot, remove the negative battery cable and hold it to the positive post for 1 minute then reconnect. This will discharge all capacitors so the system can come back online. This guide can help as well.

I have a 2002 Monte Carlo, doing the same. The guy I bought it from hacked up the harness, now has a push button to start. Still need to turn the key to start but push the button at the same time. Since I bought it 4 months ago I have had it running 3 times. The day I bought it, a month ago and last saturday. I have to do a relearn every time and after I drive it and shut it off, It turns over but no start. Even after a relearn. I'm a mechanic but I'm limited on access to scanners and such, no access to repair programs unless I want to pay for it. The car belongs to my step son I'm just trying to get it running for him. If I can get the push button out of the circuit I think it would help a lot. The push button is wired direct to battery so anytime you push it it turns over. Key or not. I am bypassing the passlock system next.
I we were back home I have all my equipment there but that 3,200 miles away.
I have it narrowed down to the injectors not pulsing. If I spray fuel into the the throttle body it runs as long as I keep putting fuel into it.
Getting to the point I may through a carbed engine in it to get rid of the computers!

About twice a month, my car will not start - everything works except it won't start. If I wait 10 minutes or so and try it again it will start. Once in a while driving down the road, the security light comes on - nothing happens but the light stays on until I shut it off and most likely it will not be on next time I start it. I have tried using a different key, doesn't matter. If you can solve this problem, I will donate big time because I have had this to two dealers who can't tell me what's wrong with it. I have had the car for four years + and as you can see, it has very low mileage. I would like to keep it a long time. Thanks for your help.

Your having a problem with an intermittent failure in the Passlock security system. It would require the use of a Tech2 scan tool to even begin to accurately diagnose the problem. I can tell you that the most common failure in these is the sensor in the ignition lock. No guarantees that is actually your problem but I can give you a way to bypass that specific component if your interested.

Here is how you can bypass the sensor.

Go buy a 2.2k (2200 ohm) ohm resistor at an electronics store. Go to radio shack and just get one as close to that as you can. Remove the covers on the steering column and locate three small wires at the lock cylinder. Cut the yellow wire and the orange/black wire or on some vehicles, its the yellow and black wires. Solder the resistor between those wires. Tape it up and put the covers back on and follow this relearn procedure. If this doesn't work you have a wiring problem in the steering column.
30 Minute Re-Learn Procedure
1. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
2. Attempt to start the engine, then release the key to ON (vehicle will not start).
3. Observe the SECURITY telltale, after approximately 10 minutes the telltale will turn OFF.
4. Turn OFF the ignition, and wait 5 seconds.
5. Repeat steps 1 through 4 two more times for a total of 3 cycles/30 minutes ( the vehicle is now ready to relearn the Passlock Sensor Data Code and/or passwords on the next ignition switch transition from OFF to CRANK).
Important
The vehicle learns the Passlockà † Sensor Data Code and/or password on the next ignition switch transition from OFF to CRANK. You must turn the ignition OFF before attempting to start the vehicle.
6. Start the engine (the vehicle has now learned the Passlock Sensor Data Code and/or password).
7. With a scan tool, clear any DTCs if desired (history DTCs will self clear after 100 ignition cycles).

At first when ever the car wonted it would not turn over when I tried to start it. I could come back in 20 to 30 min and it would start right up then the other day I turn the key on the security light was flashes then I turn key to start and the starter would not kick in and the light is still flashing. I have replaced the key tumbler and the switch and the netural switch.I checked the starter relay and all fuses I think the security system needs to be reset how do I reset it?

Hello, I have a 97 Chevy Monte Carlo LS with a 3100 v6 and 65k miles. I recently replaced the battery and now my keyless entry is not working. I don't have an owner's manual to possibly fix the problem. Need help! Thanks, Ron from Indy!

Well, I'm not sure if they work the same but it's worth a try. On my "99" silverado you stand by the drivers door- just a foot or two away- and you press the lock and the unlock buttons at the same time holding both down until the locks start locking and unlocking repeatedly. You should then be able to start using the remote as normal. Hope this works for you. Good luck. :D
