How is driving with the windows down and A/C on at the same time harmful to a car?

My husband likes to drive with the windows down And A/C on at the same time. I'm trying to explain that he shouldn't do that but I have nothing to back it up. The A/C in our last two vehicles mysteriously stopped working.

You guys most be rich doing that, throw it my way-lol Honestly I don't see any affects on that as long as the AC is functioning properly-maybe its not cold enough for him-You can await another expert to respond

Yeah he sleeps with the windows open in the middle of winter too and no, unfortunately we are Not rich :( thanks for answering

Thank you -I'm sorry this all I got for you -however unless the AC is acting up continously while in operation, when the window is down due to temperature differences-

Hello, here is one way that it could harm the ac. The out side air has dirt in it from the road and this could clog the evaporator core if the ac unit is set to max or recirculation, also if you smoke this would clog it too, and it would stink.
